Area students recognized for academics

Buffalo's Business First recently released a list of 100-area high school seniors for its 2015-All-Western New York Academic Team.  124-schools nominated more than 400-of their smartest and most accomplished students.  Each school could nominate up to four students. Nardin Academy Principal Rebecaa Reeder said three of their seniors were selected.

"It is certainly an accomplishment for us as a relatively small school. We have a 113 members of the senior class, so it was terrific to get that recognition," said Reeder in a WBFO News interview.

Nardin's Caroline Colpoys, of Orchard Park, and Maria Giaquinto, of Grand Island, were named to the first team; Maria Tompkins, of Niagara Falls, was named to the second team.

"They look for their academic record, have they done things that would put them in a position of school leadership roles or any other community involvement, community service that they may have done," noted principal Reeder.

The listing features area high school seniors from both private and public schools for their academic accomplishments.  In Buffalo, City Honors School also had three of its seniors named to the academic list.

The full list of the 100 honorees will be published in Business First's 2015-2016 Guide to Western New York Schools. That will be on the newsstands June 12.  "The competition for the academic team is intense," said Jack Connors, Business First president and publisher. "Of the almost 20,000 high school seniors in Western New York, 100 are selected for this honor."
