A charter school that will open this coming August on Buffalo's east side has won an important grant.  The Charter School of Inquiry is receiving a $200-thousand dollar facility grant from SUNY's Charter School Institute. The grant will assist with preparing the building on Edison Avenue. The new charter school will focus on performing arts for inquiry of learning.

School board chair Helene Kramer tells WBFO News this grant will help bring the school into proper compliance. It will also allow the school to offer performing arts, humanities and an infusion of African-American history.

"We expect that most of our children, the majority will be African-American, and so often African-American history is only taught in February," said Kramer.  "And we believe that it is very important for all children to know more about the strengths of African-American history.

Charter School of Inquiry was the only charter authorized to open in Buffalo this year.

The school will initially open with about 150-students in kindergarten through second grade.
