Students in Amherst are learning an important life lesson as they begin a year-long project today to benefit Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo.

Amherst Middle School Students and staff will be taking part in at least half-a-dozen activities this year from a donation drive to a talent show to raise money and other goods for the Family Resource Center at Women and Children's Hospital.

This is the first time the school has attempted a year-long project of this nature. "What we want to do is help them to know that every child in our school, all 700 of them, have the ability, have the power to make a difference in the lives of someone else and that's really how the world becomes a better place," said Principal Michael Cornell as he talked about the idea behind the school project. He added, it's a lesson the kids can take with them "forever."

The project kicks off this morning with a school assembly in which staff will present a monetary donation to pay for small laptops or other mobile devices the center can lend to patients and families.  The effort will continue with a drive to raise additional money and collect everything from teddy bears and toiletries to Tim Hortons gift cards for welcome bags for the center.  There's also a book drive in the works and a talent show to raise funding.

The Family Resource Center opened in 2013 in an effort to provide families a place to go while their child is being treated at Women and Children's Hospital.
