Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown is pledging his support and assistance to the Buffalo School District as a new leader takes the helm.
WBFO & AM-970's Eileen Buckley says he will reach out to schools superintendent Dr. Pamela Brown.
"Dr. Brown has a keen mind and is a well respected education leader. And I'm certainly looking forward to working with her and her team," said Mayor Brown.
The Mayor said this is an "exciting and important" time for the city school district. He noted the district conducted what he considered an exhausted search process in the hiring of Dr. Brown who has worked in much larger school districts.
"They selected the candidate that they feel is best qualified to lead our schools forward. Dr. Brown has exceptional educational credentials," said Mayor Brown.
The city doesn't control the school district's budget or hiring, but it does provided revenues through its property taxes.
Mayor Brown tells WBFO & AM-970 he is ready to share some new revenue ideas with the new school leader and district.
"One idea is to increase the ad recycling in the schools and share some of that revenue with the school district," said Mayor Brown. "The Council recently floated a proposal to provide funding to attendance teachers to the schools. Certainly something I am willing to look at."
Mayor Brown has added about $12-million to the Buffalo School District since he was elected mayor in 2006.
