Buffalo school board holds special meeting Tuesday

The pressure appears to be mounting on the Buffalo Teachers Federation as the Buffalo school district scrambles to save $9 million in state funding.

At a special meeting at noon Tuesday, the Buffalo School Board is expected to formally request that the Buffalo Teachers Federation drop its request that any new teacher evaluation system account for the district's dismal student attendance record.

Last week, state education officials informed Buffalo officials that they would not accept an evaluation system which did not include the performances of students who were absent more than seven weeks in a school year.

BTF leaders are expected to meet Wednesday. In January, the state withheld school improvement grants from 10 districts, including Buffalo, for failing to agree with unions on evaluation systems.

Since then, six districts have had their funding restored.
