An Amherst man killed himself by hanging just over a week ago while being held in the Niagara County Jail.

Niagara County Sheriff Michael Filicetti confirmed Monday that Leroy Cheek, 36, was found to be "unresponsive" in his cell and ambulances were called at 12:06 a.m. on Feb. 27.

Cheek was charged with murder in connection with the Jan. 11 stabbing death of Jesse Gonzalez Miranda, 25, of West Seneca at a home on Niagara Road in Bergholz.

Cheek's death is under investigation by the state Attorney General's Office and the Commission on Corrections. Niagara County District Attorney Brian Seaman said Cheek's case had not yet been presented to a grand jury for a possible indictment.
