John Juran was sentenced to three years probation, fined $500 dollars and ordered to pay $500 in restitution.

John Juran, 52, of Getzville is the first Western New Yorker to be sentenced for his role in the Jan. 6, 2021 uprising at the U.S. Capitol.

A U.S. District Court judge in Washington sentenced Juran to three years probation, fined him $500 and ordered him to pay $500 in restitution. Prosecutors had also requested 60 days of home confinement, but that was not included in the sentence.

Juran had pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor Capitol riot charge, along with three other area residents with similar charges. He was determined to not have participated in any violence or property destruction during the event, which resulted in a misdemeanor rather than a felony charge.

Authorities said cell phone analysis indicated he was in the building for only about 10 minutes and left when told to do so by police. Juran has since expressed his regret for participating in the uprising.
