Chautauqua County Sheriff James Quattrone has announced the death of a 65-year-old inmate at the Chautauqua County jail in Mayville Monday.
The sheriff said the inmate began having chest pains and difficulty breathing, and that correction officers took appropriate action.
They contacted Emergency Medical Services, who transported him to Westfield Memorial Hospital. However, upon arrival at the emergency room, the inmate became unresponsive and medical staff were unable to revive him.
Due to new New York State laws, the Attorney General's Office was notified and sent a detective to the jail to further investigate. New York State Commission of Corrections has also been notified, and will also conduct an investigation.
