A federal indictment against 35-year-old Thomas Sibick was unsealed Friday, revealing more charges against him in connection with the violent invasion of the US Capitol building on January 6, 2021.
Sibick had already been charged with counts in relation to the January 6 uprising. Prosecutors accuse him of being part of a group that overpowered and assaulted District of Columbia Metropolitian Police Officer Michael Fanone. Sibick insists he was trying to assist the officer, but later turned in Fanone's badge to authorities, after allegedly burying it in the backyard of his Buffalo area home.
Investigators allege he could also be seen in photos holding a Capitol Police officer's shield.
Upon Friday's indictment, Sibick's updated charges are Knowingly Entering or Remaining in any Restricted Building or Grounds Without Lawful Authority; Violent Entry and Disorderly Conduct on Capitol Grounds; Obstruction of Law Enforcement During Civil Disorder; Assaulting, Resisting, or Impeding Certain Officers; Taking from a Person Anything of Value by Force and Violence or by Intimidation Within Special Maritime and Territorial Jurisdiction.
