Pain management doctor pleads guilty to fraudulent opioid prescriptions

MD.com

A former Williamsville doctor has pleaded guilty to unlawfully acquiring controled prescriptions by misrepresentation and fraud, and scheming to defraud a health care benefit program.

Neurologist Dr. Gautam Arora, 44, was charged with prescribing opioids to multiple patients outside the usual course of practice and without a legitimate medical purpose while working as a pain management doctor at the Hens Pain Center in Amherst April 2013-May 2017.

Arora also fraudulently billed Medicare over $92,000 for services not performed in full or at all, during the first quarter of 2016.

Arora faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced in U.S. District Court June 18.
