EC Sheriff's deputy arraigned on DWI charges

An Erie County Sheriff's deputy from Orchard Park was arraigned Wednesday evening on misdemeanor charges of driving while intoxicated.

It is alleged that Aaron Naegely, 45, was involved in a single vehicle crash while driving a Sheriff's Office vehicle off duty on Jewett Holmwood Road in the Town of Aurora Oct. 2, 2020. Prosecutors said it was his first offense. He was also charged with having a blood alcohol level of 0.08% alcohol or more while driving a motor vehicle.

Prosecutors requested the suspension of Naegely's driver's license, but Aurora Town Justice Anthony DiFillipo granted him a hardship license at the arraignment, allowing driving to work and medical appointments only.

The deputy was released on his own recognizance and a return court date is pending. Naegely faces up to a year in jail if convicted.
