The mayor and former police chief of Massena, NY was arrested Tuesday afternoon on alleged drug charges, tampering with evidence and failing to comply with a police order.

In a statement released Tuesday evening, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff's office said the arrest of Timmy Currier was a result of an undercover operation with the U.S. Dept. of Homeland Security and the county DA's office.

Officers attempted to pull Currier over Tuesday, though he allegedly drove for about a third of a mile through Massena before stopping. The Sheriff's office alleges that "just prior to stopping his vehicle, Currier was observed by detectives throwing approximately one gram of crack cocaine out his passenger window."

Officers arrested Currier for possessing a controlled substance, tampering with physical evidence, and failing to comply with a police order. Video of Currier's arrest circulated widely on Facebook Tuesday night.

Currier was elected mayor of Massena in 2014 after serving as the village's police chief for more than two decades.
