Buffalo man arraigned in fire death of girlfriend's mother

A Buffalo man was virtually arraigned in Erie County Court Tuesday afternoon in the fire-related death of his girlfriend's mother.

Daniel Martinez, 46, was indicted on a charge of second degree murder. He is accused of intentionally a fire inside his girlfriend's residence, on the first floor of a multi-family home on Concord Avenue in Buffalo during the early morning hours of Sept. 30.

The girlfriend's mother, Maria Galazka, 66, suffered multiple burns and smoke inhalation during the fire and died of her injuries on Nov. 5 at Erie County Medical Center. One Buffalo firefighter was also injured during the fire, and was treated and released from ECMC.

Martinez has been remanded without bail and faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison if convicted at a future court date.
