Long Island man gets 1-3 years for killing Buffalo woman

A Long Island man was sentenced in Erie County Court Tuesday to an indeterminate sentence of 1-3 years in prison in the death of a Buffalo woman.

Carlos Velez, 31, of Greenport, NY was sentenced for one count of second degree vehicular manslaughter.

Authorities said he was under the influence of marijuana on Oct. 11, 2018 when he drove through a red light at Genesee Street and Fillmore Avenue on Buffalo's East Side and crashed into another vehicle. That pushed his car onto the sidewalk, where it struck and killed Adrienne Early, 47, who was standing waiting for a bus.

Velez pleaded guilty to the highest count in the indictment against him on March 5 of this year.
