Former Swormville fire captain sentenced for embezzlement

Swormville Fire Department

A former captain of the Swormville Fire Department has been sentenced to a three-year conditional discharge  for embezzling from the fire company.

Brent Dewitt, 36, of East Amherst pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court to felony counts of fourth degree grand larceny and first degree of falsifying business records last Oct. 30.

He admitted to stealing nearly $24,000 via numerous unauthorized transactions to his personal PayPal accounts with the fire department's credit card and generating false receipts between Nov. 1, 2018 and April 30, 2019.

Dewitt was removed from his position after the thefts were recovered and PayPal has reimbursed the fire company for the losses.

He must perform 100 hours of community service, and cannot handle money for any organization for three years.

Mark Wozniak, WBFO's local All Things Considered host, has been at WBFO since mid-1978.
