Owner arrested for setting his Mayville restaurant on fire

Chatauqua County Fire Department

Last week Monday, a fire destroyed the Mayville Diner, at 7 West Chautauqua St. in Mayville, across the street from the Mayville Fire Department. On Tuesday, the owner of the restaurant was arrested for seting the fire.

The Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office and the Chautauqua Fire Investigation Team have been investigating the cause of the blaze. The Sheriff's Department now says owner Michael S. Ellis, 40, has been charged with a felony count of third-degree arson.

Ellis was arrested and arraigned in the Town of Chautauqua Court and was released on his own recognizance, per the new New York State bail reform laws. A court date is pending.
