People Inc. warns of security breach impacting current, former clients

People Inc.

People Inc. has learned of a data security breach involving protected health information belonging to current and former clients.

The largest nonprofit health and human services agency in Western New York says it has notified those potentially impacted and provided resources to assist them. People Inc. operates nearly 200 residential sites, day programs and regional offices throughout the region and in Greater Rochester.

It tracks the breach to February 19, when the non-profit discovered an unknown individual had gained access to an employee's email account. During an independent forensics investigation, it learned another employee account also may have been accessed.

The personal information may have included names, addresses, Social Security numbers, financial account information, medical information, health insurance information, driver’s license numbers or other government identification numbers.

The organization says the incident has been reported to the FBI and it has set up a toll-free call center to answer questions: 855-579-3669.
