Phone scam alleging sheriff warrant resurfaces

Erie County Sheriff's Department

The Erie County Sheriff's Department is warning residents about a phone scam that has resurfaced, allegedly from one of their own.

Sheriff Tim Howard says the department received two complaints Tuesday about an individual representing themselves as Sgt. Mason from the Erie County Sheriff’s Office.

The scammer is telling individuals they have a warrant for their arrest for missing jury duty, but if they purchase a Green Dot card, they can pay the fine and void the warrant.

All of this is false, Howard said.

The Sheriff reminds residents that it does not call individuals requesting payment for fines or outstanding warrants, and it does not request people to purchase Green Dot cards or any other form of prepaid cards.

Howard urges people to ignore these scam attempts and “Just Hang Up.”
