Kaisertown man found guilty in beating death of girlfriend's toddler

Erie County District Attorney's office

A jury has found a Buffalo man guilty in the beating death of his girlfriend's toddler.

The Erie County District Attorney's Office says Bashar Hall, 24, was found guilty of murder in the second degree and manslaughter in the first degree following a four-day trial.

This follows a guilty verdict by the toddler's mother, Keona Owens, in February. She was also found guilty of murder and manslaughter following a bench trial.

District Attorney John Flynn said the couple beat Xavion Hazzard, 2 1/2, at their home on Weaver Street in Kaisertown in July of 2018. The boy later died from his injuries at Oishei Children's Hospital.

“This little boy was beaten by the people who were there to love him, care for him and protect him," said Flynn. "I hope that justice has been served by this defendant being convicted on the highest possible charges.”

Hall faces a maximum of 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced in July. He remains remanded without bail.
