Separate incidents involving two members of the Town of Tonawanda police SWAT team have led to the indefinite suspension of that team by town police officials.
The suspension took effect Feb. 13, by order of Chief Jerome Uschold. The suspension does not apply to small-scale implementation of SWAT officers to resolve police incidents, according to the department.
In late December, Lt. Corey Flatau was charged with DWI following a crash in Niagara County. On Jan. 19, Officer Howard Scholl was involved in a crash after running a stop sign at Englewood and St. Johns Avenues following a SWAT team awards banquet.
Chief Uschold and the Town Board last week requested an investigation into that crash by the Erie County District Attorney's office, pending Scholl's possible dismissal from the police force.
