Lackawanna man who strangled his pregnant wife gets 5 years in prison

A Lackawanna man has been sentenced for a a violent attack in 2017 on his then-pregnant wife.

The Erie County District Attorney's office says Ghanem AbuGhanem, 33, was sentenced in Erie County Court Wednesday to five years in prison and five years of post-release supervision in connection with the attack on July 18, 2017.

AbuGhanem assaulted and strangled his wife to the point of unconsciousness after an argument inside their Ingham Avenue home. When she regained consciousness, she had a bloodied mouth and nose, but was able to call 911 for assistance.

AbuGhanem was found guilty on all charges in the indictment against him during a jury trial in December. At Wednesday's sentencing, the judge also signed an order of protection for the victim, good through 2030.
