A Niagara County Sheriff's deputy is being credited with saving the life of a drowning child.
The Niagara County Sheriff's department says deputy John Vosburgh responded to a call of a child in the water at Olcott Beach Thursday just after 8 a.m. The girl appeared to be drowning and the deputy went out about 50-60 yards into the water to rescue her.
The child was conscious and breathing, and coughed up water after being brought in to shore. She was transported to Oishei Children's Hospital in Buffalo for further evaluation.
About 45 minutes later, deputies found a nearby Main Street residence with its front door open and arrested the girl's father, who was asleep when they arrived. Joshua Wankasy, 34 of Olcott, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Wankasy has a scheduled date in Newfane Town Court on Nov. 6.
