A former corrections officer has pleaded guilty to attempting to fatally stab his ex-girlfriend.
The Erie County District Attorney's Office says Peter Vegas, 38 of Buffalo, pleaded guilty in State Supreme Court Tuesday to one count of attempted murder in the second degree, one count of assault in the second degree and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
DA John Flynn says on the evening of May 21, 2017, Vegas drove from his work at the Attica Correctional Facility to the home of his ex-girlfriend on Sage Street in Buffalo. When the two began to argue, she locked him out of her home.
But Vegas grabbed a knife, tore down her screen door, then broke through her deadbolt. Once inside the home, Vegas stabbed his ex-girlfriend multiple times in the back of her neck.
She was able to break free and scream for help. Vegas was apprehended at his home a short time later.
He faces a maximum of 25 years in prison when he is sentenced in Dec. 3 and remains remanded without bail.
