Sheriff: 2-year-old girl abused while in ICU

Erie County Sheriff's Department

Erie County Sheriff's deputies have arrested a Grand Island woman suspected of abusing a 2-year-old girl in the intensive care unit at Oishei Children's Hospital.

The Sheriff's Ofice says Brianna Valenti, 26, was arrested after detectives were contacted by Child Protective Services about the alleged abuse on Sept. 10.

The child had been transported to the hospital that afternoon, after reportedly passing out and experiencing trouble breathing at a Grand Island residence. However, an investigation found the two-year-old sustained injuries, resulting in her being unresponsive. She remains in ICU.

Valenti has been charged with a felony count of reckless assault of a child, a felony count of assault - conduct causing risk of death - and a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child. Valenti, an acquaintance of the child's biological father, is being held at the Erie County Holding Center on $150,000.00 bail.
