94-year-old assisted living resident fires gun at paramedics

Mary Agnes Manor

Buffalo Police took a 94-year-old man into custody, after he fired a gun within Mary Agnes Manor on Porter Avenue Wednesday.

Police say two paramedics were escorting the man to the ninth-floor elevator when he suddenly pulled a .38-caliber gun from a pocket on his walker and fired a shot, missing a maintenance worker. The bullet became embedded in a wall.

BPD Capt. Jeff Rinaldo said the paramedics did not think the man actually had a gun, but "further tragedy" was averted by their quick action.

The resident of the assisted living manor for patients with early dementia and Alzheimer's was subdued by one of the paramedics, who were on hand to take the man for a psychiatric exam at Erie County Medical Center. No injuries were reported.

Police are consulting with the Erie County District Attorney's office about possible charges.
