Sheriff's deputy cleared in fatal shooting

Indian Falls Log Cabin Restaurant

A Genesee County grand jury has cleared a sheriff's deputy of any charges in connection with a shooting death of a suspect.

The incident occurred April 11 at the Log Cabin Restaurant in Pembroke. Authorities were called to the scene with reports of an armed man who was threatening customers.

Keith Kent, 61 of Albion, confronted officers outside of the building. Genesee County Sheriff's deputy Ryan Young fired a shot when Kent refused to drop his weapon.

It was the first time in more than four decades anyone at the Sheriff's Department could remember a deputy fatally shooting a suspect. Young is a six-year police veteran, the last two years with Genesee County.
