Truck driver pleads guilty in UB nurse death

University at Buffalo School of Nursing

A truck driver from Saratoga County has pleaded guilty to killing an assistant professor of nursing at the University at Buffalo.

Kristofer Gregorek, 27 of Ballston Spa, pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in a distracted driving crash on the westbound Thruway near the Depew exit. His truck rear-ended a car, killing its driver. Gregorek was using his cellphone for shopping while driving on June 8, 2017 when the mid-morning crash occurred.

Ellen Volpe, 45, a Rochester nurse practitioner, assistant professor at the UB School of Nursing and mother of two young children, died at the scene. Another person suffered non life-threatening injuries, as three other vehicles were also struck.
