Buffalo residents are anxiously awaiting word from the state Attorney General's Office. The AG is expected to release its findings into the death of Wardel "Meech" Davis Wednesday.
The 20-year-old Buffalo man died under arrest in police custody in February, sparking a number of protests by city residents.
It is rare that the AG's Office will step into a local investigation. However, the office also is investigating the death of 26-year-old Jose Hernandez-Rossy and wounding of 31-year-old Buffalo Police officer Joseph Acquino under unclear circumstances in May.
After no cause of death was found in an initial autopsy, the Erie County Medical Examiner later ruled Davis' death a homicide, brought on by a respiratory ailment while being restrained by officers. The Davis family has said there was a delay in getting medical treatment.
However, an attorney for one of the officers involved has argued that a homicide does not mean the police are criminally responsible for Davis' medical condition or death.
Another "Rally for Meech" is planned in downtown Wednesday beginning at 5 p.m. by residents who say they are concerned about racial justice and police brutality. A location is to be determined.
