New cadaver dog to be deputized for search and rescue

Erie County Sheriff's Department

The Erie County Sheriff's Department has received funds to deputize a second female cadaver dog.

Leiche is a 2 1/2-year-old rescue who is being trained in Ontario, Canada, in order to receive her National Association of Professional Canine Handlers' certification and be ready for duty.

Cadaver dogs are specifically trained to locate buried human remains. Once certified, Leiche will work with an existing K9 handler at the Sheriff's Department, but be available to surrounding counties for search and rescue.

The Department said, once on duty, she will be one of only a few NAPCH-certified cadaver dogs in the northeast. The funds came from the Sheriff's 21st Century Foundation.
