The Cheektowaga man accused of second degree attempted murder and first degree assault in connection with the hammer attack on his wife has been released on $10,000 bail.
Martin Turkiewicz, 88, is also subject to a "complete stay away" order of protection forbidding any contact with his wife Rita, 88, by order of Cheektowaga Town Court.
According to his attorney, Joseph Terranova, Turkiewicz was there for his wife ahead of himself. Personius said Turkiewicz thought he killed his wife on Saturday after hitting her in the head with a hammer. The attorney also said that Turkiewicz acted out of compassion, because of his wife's dementia and frequent falls and infections that required her to receive frequent medical treatment.
The attack happened at the Garden Gate Health Care Facility on Union Road. Rita Turkiewicz is expected to be released from the Erie County Medical Center later this week, after treatment for severe head injuries.
