BBB warns of tech support scam

The Better Business Bureau is warning Western New Yorkers about a new scam. It says to be weary of strangers pretending to offer computer tech support.
The Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York says one scam involves a phone call from someone claiming to be a specialist at a computer company. The person claims there is a software issue that requires them to access the computer remotely.

In another, a pop-up window appears on your computer screen, advising the user to contact Microsoft immediately about a security breach.  In another, a caller to the bureau said their computer screen froze and they wrote checks totaling $900 to solve the problem.

The Better Business Bureau reminds people to not rely on caller ID to know who is calling and to not give remote access to their computer to strangers.
