The death of a five-week old infant has been turned over to Buffalo Homicide detectives. Police say a baby boy died from injuries inflicted upon him at his home on Heath Street in the city's University District. The baby was found not breathing on November 10. Officers who responded to the home assisted in trying to resuscitate the boy. He was rushed to nearby Sisters hospital, then later transferred to Women's and Children's Hospital.
The baby was on life support for several days, but died last Thursday, November 15. Homicide detectives say when the baby was admitted to the hospital he had suffered multiple hemorrhages.
Homicide Squad Detectives James A. Lema and Salvatore A. Valvo learned that the child had a bad prognosis when admitted to the hospital and that he had suffered multiple hemorrhages, had indications of seizure activity, and there was a high probability that the child had suffered from shaken baby syndrome.
An autopsy was conducted ruling the death a homicide, due to blunt force head injuries. The autopsy also detected brain damage, optical hemorrhaging and spinal column injury.
