Alleged Buffalo heroin dealer arrested

Buffalo Police Department

Law enforcement officials say a suspected longtime drug dealer is now out of business.

The FBI teamed up with Buffalo Police to execute a search warrant at 55 Garner Avenue and seized more than 200 grams of heroin, $368,000 in cash and three handguns.

Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda says 51-year-old George Torres was arrested at his home without incident.

Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda, with U.S Attorney William Hochul in the background, details the arrest of George Torres.

"We believe he has been dealing for many years, primarily on Buffalo's West side. What is unusual is to recover that amount of cash in one search warrant," Derenda said.

The commissioner says the seized money will be returned to local departments to be used for gunbacks or needed items.

"The cash, drugs, and weapons recovered makes Buffalo a little bit safer and sends a message to other persons who would participate in such activity," said FBI special agent-in-charge Christopher Piehota.

Torres has been charged with unlawfully possessing with intent to distribute more than 200 grams of heroin, possessing firearms in furtherance of drug trafficking, and being a felon in possession of firearms. He is being held without bail.

U.S. Attorney William Hochul says, if convicted, Torres faces a mandatory minimum of ten years in prison, a $4 million fine, or both.
