05:30 PM - 07:00 PM on Thu, 14 Dec 2023
Join us at Buffalo Toronto Public Media on Thursday, December 14 at 5:30pm for dinner and to celebrate our latest digital series, Compact History!
We will be screening two episodes of Compact History, looking at the curriculum resources on PBS LearningMedia, and hearing from series producer, Akram Shibly and series host Cory McCants.
ABOUT THE SERIES: Follow Cory, a time traveling Middle School history teacher, as he journeys beyond your textbook telling untold stories that transformed our world. From his time portal in Western New York, Cory discovers connections between local historical events and their national impact. Meet fascinating people along the way and see firsthand how history surrounds you and includes you!
THE GREAT LAW OF PEACE | EPISODE 1: Cory shares a revelation that the United States Constitution was inspired by Native Americans! He transports us to a longhouse at Ganondagan where we learn about the Great Law of Peace, an ancient telling of the formation of the Haudenosaunee confederacy by indigenous men and women who established the oldest participatory democracy still in existence.
BONE WARS | EPISODE 2: Cory travels west to teach folks about westward expansion, but his lesson is interrupted by Coré - an alternate-dimension version of him who believes he’s cooler. Coré wants Cory to talk about the Bone Wars, a competition between two paleontologists that led to the discovery of dozens of dinosaurs, and their demise. As Cory explains the various reasons why folks migrated west, he eventually caves and tells the Bone Wars story, trying to emphasize the cost of competition - both in terms of the rivalry between these paleontologists, and the project to expand the country. Coré, on the other hand, tries to one-up Cory and boasts that competition leads to discovery and innovation.
We will take a look at the curriculum on PBS LearningMedia. Each episode includes Teaching Tips, Vocabulary, and multiple activities. The curriculum is designed for grades 5-8, but can be adapted for use with other grades.
The event is free but you must register to attend.
