General Motors has resumed limited operations at its Lockport components plant.

Spokesman Tom Read tells The Buffalo News that GM Lockport is supporting production of "critical components" for the company's customer care and aftersales network.

This week, New York gave car dealerships in the central part of the state permission to reopen showrooms, with restrictions. Car dealerships are considered essential during the coronavirus pandemic, especially for first responders who need vehicle service, and their parts departments need to be supplied.

GM Lockport is currently operating on one partial shift with 160 hourly and 75 salaried workers, out of its workforce of 1,445. GM said Wednesday it is targeting May 18 to restart production at most of its factories, although it plans to do so in stages.

As part of its overall restart plan, General Motors said some onproduction will resume at its engine plant in St. Catharines, ON next week. Spokespers Jennifer Wright said the automaker is going to follow extensive safety measures at the plant, which employs more than 1,200 people.
