Store closings announced by Pier 1 Imports and Valu will affect Western New York.
The Pier 1 chain recently announced it would be closing as many as 450 of its 936 stores and some distribution centers in the United States and Canada as part of a downsizing move. The company lost $59 million during its most recent quarter, as sales fell by 13%.
Now, it has been learned that one of the stores to close is its Walden Consumer Square location at 1740 Walden Ave. in Cheektowaga. A going-out-of-business sale has begun there.
The company said its stores in Blasdell and Tonawanda will remain open.
Meanwhile, the Buffalo-based Valu home center chain has announced it will be closing three of its 41 stores. They are in Olean, Painted Post and Warren, PA.
The family-owned business said it does so with regret, but adds it wants to keep the business healthy well into the future.
