Tonawanda workers vote against GM's contract offer

Chris Caya/WBFO

By a vote of 603-579, General Motors' latest contract offer has been rejected by workers at the company's Tonawanda Engine plant.

Members of the United Auto Workers at General Motors' plants in Lockport and in Rochester had previously voted the offer down. But Local 774 President JR Baker says UAW's national office will determine if nearly six-week old strike comes to end.

"They tally all the locals for GM around the nation and they come away with either a ratification or not," Baker said.

Baker says the UAW did not take a position on GM's offer. He says the union educated its members about the tentative agreement, but it was up to individual members to decide.

"I'm proud of our membership here for enduring this six weeks now," Baker said. "Also, I'd like to thank our community around here (for) still supporting us."
