Broadway Market to offer "Sneak Peek" of shopping season this weekend

Michael Mroziak, WBFO

The days leading up to Easter Sunday are the busiest for Buffalo's Broadway Market. While its official Easter shopping season doesn't begin until next week, the East Side landmark is offering a "sneak peek" this weekend to give the public an introduction to the vendors - and the improvements - they can expect this year.

The Easter Sneak Peek, as it's called, will run Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

"We have close to 90 vendors that will be open," said Broadway Market general manager Kathleen Peterson. "All of our permanent vendors will, of course, be open and then an additional 60 vendors just for the season."

There will also be live music performed at limited times during the weekend.

Mayor Byron Brown, who last week announced this sneak peak event, said the City of Buffalo has invested millions of dollars to fix up the market and more investment is coming.

"With the police substation that is coming and the commercial kitchen that is coming, with the exterior renovations that are coming, that will be another close to $2.5 million that will be invested in the Broadway Market," Mayor Brown said.

Work on the commercial kitchen is expected to begin "in a few weeks," according to the mayor. The substation, when finished later this year, will be located in the northwest corner and will be accessible both inside the market and outdoors. In the interim, a mobile headquarters will be set up outside the main entrance of the market to serve as the substation.

The official Easter shopping season at Broadway Market is scheduled to open on March 15 with a kickoff ceremony.
