A fixture of Cheektowaga and the local music scene has closed. After 40 years in business, Airport Music has shut its doors for the last time.
The Cayuga Road music center announced in September that the end was coming. Store Manager Bryon Federick this week said over the next months, the store will begin selling its remaining inventory online.
In a Facebook post, he and owner David Jurewicz thanked all the staff who have worked and taught at the store throughout the years.
"Most importantly, though, Dave and everyone at Airport Music would like to thank our customers," Federick said. "We couldn't have had such a long and successful run without your support and loyalty....Many of you are much more than just customers - you have become part of the Airport Music family. Saying goodbye to you has been the hardest part of this process."
Federick says local music stores are an "endangered species" that needs support.
"Now that we are closed, we sincerely hope that you will support other local music stores," he said. "The local music store is an endangered species and they do need your support to survive in the age of box stores and giant internet sites. Local music stores provide better prices, customer service and knowledge than any national chain or website ever could."
Airport Music supplied and repaired instruments, sold sheet music and gave lessons to "thousands of Western New Yorkers, both young and old" over 40 years.
