General Mills invests $25 million in its Buffalo plant

Chris Caya WBFO News

Downtown Buffalo should continue smelling like Cheerios for years down the road.

General Mills is making a $25 million investment in its plant at the foot of Michigan Avenue near Canalside. New equipment has gone in to allow the plant to add the production of Corn Chex and Honey Nut Chex to its cereal lineup.

Plant Manager Allen Brown attributes the expansion to the plant's 417 employees.

"What the investment says about the organization's confidence in us being able to identify the right talent as well as get product out the door in an efficient manner is huge. It really says a lot about the organizations confidence in Buffalo, New York's ability to do a great job," Brown said at a rare news conference at the facility Friday morning.

Along with low-cost hydropower from Niagara Falls, General Mills received $1 million in grants from state taxpayers.

The plant has been milling flour in Buffalo for 110 years, making it the nation's oldest General Mills Cereal Plant.
