Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada could start allowing fully vaccinated Americans into Canada as of mid-August for non-essential travel and should be in a position to welcome fully vaccinated travelers from all countries by early September.

Trudeau shared the timetable while talking with province premiers and territorial leaders Thursday about the COVID-19 pandemic. The news was quietly disclosed Thursday night when his office released a readout of the call.

He also told leaders that if the current vaccination rate keeps heading higher, fully vaccinated travelers from around the world could begin arriving by early September.

The border has been closed to non-essential travel since the early months of the pandemic, disrupting binational business and families. Although a Nanos Research poll this month found restrictions on cross-border travel remain popular with many Canadians, more and more Canadian officials have joined U.S. officials in their quest to eliminate restrictions.

Among those U.S officials has been Rep. Brian Higgins (D-Buffalo). In a WBFO interview, Higgins said Trudeau's timetable is long-overdue and welcomed.
