The Canadian government is banning 1,500 assault-style weapons. The cabinet order that takes effect immediately doesn't forbid ownership, but it does ban the trade in military-style weapons.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said these weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only -- to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time.

The order has a two-year amnesty period for current owners, and there will be a compensation program.

The Liberals promised tighter gun control laws during the election campaign and were pressed to take action following the murders of 22 people in Nova Scotia less than two weeks ago.

Canadian Justice Minister David Lametti said no one should try to surrender their assault-style guns while physical distancing is in effect to fight COVID-19.
