Pet adoptions on hold across Canada due to coronavirus

Toronto Humane Society

Adoptions are on hold and pet shelters across Canada are scrambling to make ends meet to take care of their animals due to COVID-19.

Humane society offices in Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto are closed to the general public. Volunteers have been sent home and the dogs, cats and other animals at the shelters are going to have to wait before getting a chance to find a new forever friend.

Jessica Bohrson of the Calgary Humane Society says people can't just drop off animals they want to surrender. She says they will consider emergency situations on a case-by-case basis.

The Toronto Humane Society is continuing to give out supplies to those less fortunate through its pet food bank and is looking at digital pet adoptions as an option.

The shelters rely on public donations and are worried Canadians could reduce the amount they give if they are distracted by the current health crisis.
