Niagara Regional Police investigating one officer shot by another

Google Maps

A Niagara Regional Police officer is at Hamilton General Hospital in critical, but stable condition. He was injured Thursday from what the provincial agency suspects was a series of shots fired by another officer.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit probes all incidents of serious injury or death involving police officers. In a statement, the SIU said it is investigating a case of one officer shooting another officer in an altercation at the scene of an impaired driver accident in Pelham, ON near Welland.

In that accident, a male driver lost control on a curve, went off the road, struck a tree and the car began to burn. He was able to get out of the car, but two 19-year-old passengers had to be extricated from the burning car, leaving them with very serious injuries.

The two officers were at the scene of that accident investigating what happened, when the shooting occurred. Canadian reporters are identifying the wounded officer as Constable Nathan Parker. The other officer is identified as Det. Sgt. Shane Donovan
