Ontario has its first confirmed case of the Zika virus

Toronto (CP) — Chief Medical Officer of Health Doctor David Williams says a person who travelled to Colombia has tested positive for the Zika virus.

Officials say Ontario residents travelling to regions affected with Zika virus should protect themselves by taking protective measures to prevent mosquito bites.

There has been an explosion of Zika infections in South and Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean since the first cases began showing up in Brazil last May.

Williams said the risk to Ontarians remains "very low," since the mosquitoes that transmit the virus aren't established in Canada.
