No crowds, but Buffalo's New Year's ball drop will go on

WBFO file

For the first time in over three decades, crowds will not be gathering at Roosevelt Plaza in downtown Buffalo to watch the ball drop on New Year’s Eve. The countdown will take place virtually, with coverage on WKBW-TV.

Mayor Byron Brown said the event offers a safe way for everyone to gather and to support the youth of Buffalo.

“This year’s virtual ball drop is a benefit for the Police Athletic League of Buffalo. And the need is great,” Brown said. “During our virtual New Year’s Eve celebration, you’ll get to meet some of our youth who participate in PAL programming. These are important programs and serve as a lifeline for many of our children.”

Marc Jaromin, WKBW-TV general manager, said the virtual event will still be a New Year’s to remember, featuring musical performances and celebrity appearances.

“We’ll also have a look back at some of the positivity, some of the very best Buffalo strong moments in this very difficult year,” he said. “I believe we’re all ready to celebrate the end of 2020, but we’re also planning a fresh start to 2021 with some very special announcements and a few surprises.”

Jaromin said the event will feature exclusive performances from the Goo Goo Dolls, the Buffalo Philharmonic Choir and other local musicians.
