Kavinoky Theatre to make major upgrades with $145K state grant

Kavinoky Theatre

A Buffalo theater will use a recently awarded state grant to pay for some major upgrades.

The Kavinoky Theatre was awarded a $145,000 grant from New York's Regional Economic Development Council. The theater will use the funding for a Broadway-style covered entryway, new seats and an updated projection system to expand productions.

Executive Artistic Director Lorraine O'Donnell said the awning will make guests feel like they are taking in a show in New York City.

"We are thrilled to receive this award," said O'Donnell. "This grant will breathe new life into the theatre and provide our audience with an even more enjoyable experience."

The Kavinoky, which is owned by D'Youville College and located on its campus, is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.

“This state investment will support the Kavinoky Theatre’s mission to foster creativity and offer Western New Yorkers immersive experiences into all genres of theatre,” said Sen. Tim Kennedy, a D'Youville graduate. “By supporting the Theatre’s efforts to preserve the Kavinoky’s charm, we’re ensuring that this City of Buffalo icon will continue to inspire future artists, actors and writers for generations to come.”
