School is out for the summer. However, school is not out forever. This is the time when kids want to be as far away from school-related activities as possible. But reading during the summer remains an integral part of increasing a child’s literacy aptitude.
The Buffalo and Erie County Public Library System continues to encourage this endeavor with a number of events and programs during the summer months.
“Study after study has shown us that reading will help a child maintain their academic school level throughout the summer,” said Library Director Mary Jean Jakubowski. “They call it the ‘Summer Slide.’ Without that, increasing vocabulary, keeping the brain functioning. [It’s] absolutely important.”
For children who may owe money from late fees, the library continues to offer their Read Down Your Fines opportunity; for every 15 minutes of book reading, one Library Buck will go towards paying the fine. This year, at the Isaias Gonzalez-Soto Branch on Porter Avenue, children under 17 can borrow soccer or lacrosse equipment and “play down” their fines and fees.
“We want to get everyone over to that library, utilizing this great program for the summer.” Jakubowski said.
Other events include the Passport to Reading where kids are encouraged to travel to all 37 public libraries in Erie County to have their passport stamped for the opportunity to win prizes.
There is also the Universe of Stories storytelling and craft program at Buffalo Waterfront beginning July 2nd. Jakubowski said further details on all of this summer’s events can be found on their website.
