Every summer weekend in Buffalo seems to feature a cultural festival, from Greek to Italian to Lebanese and many more. This year, Jewish culture is being added to that list.
The inaugural Great Buffalo Jewbilee! celebration is being held at Temple Beth Zion and the Jewish Community Center, both on Delaware Avenue, this Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
“We wanted to create an opportunity to share what is wonderful about Jewish culture: the foods that we eat as the Jewish people and our connection to our Jewish story through the arts, music, and dance,” said Buffalo Jewish Federation CEO Rob Goldberg.
Festival-goers can enjoy activities for all ages, from learning about local connections to Israel to making homemade matzah balls in the food tents.
“We hope to be informative and perhaps even educational. We want people of all ages to have fun. We have special programming just for children. Of course we’ve got Jewish food and we even have a Jewish brewer,” Goldberg said.
The day will also feature the grand opening of the newest Jewish Community Center near Temple Beth Zion downtown. Goldberg hopes the event will gain popularity and become a staple of Buffalo summers.
“People should be prepared to have fun, they should come with an appetite, and hopefully they’ll leave satisfied with a fully belly and a greater appreciation for Jewish culture,” he added.
Admission is free. Larkin Square will host “Jamboree to the Jewbilee” Thursday night to kick off the weekend’s festivities.
