It is proving to be a busy year for the Buffalo-Niagara film industry. Three major productions are currently shooting scenes in the area and a highly anticipated movie filmed at several local sites will be released next month.
The word is out - the next film in the Purge series includes scenes currently being shot in the Buffalo-Niagara area. The True Adventures of Wolfboy is also filming at local sites and the production Killer Son-In-Law is about to wrap up local work. The latter film is directed by Fred Olen Ray, who has become a regular visitor to the region for about half a dozen films to date.
"And, you know, Fred is a perfect example of what has been able to happen here," said Tim Clark, Executive Director of the Buffalo Niagara Film Commission. "The word spreads and people want to come back, so we get return business, as well."
Clark said the state's film tax credit program has certainly played a big role. It is less expensive to film in Buffalo, compared to nearby Toronto. He said local preservationists deserve credit, because local historic architecture is proving popular, while similar buildings are becoming harder to find elsewhere.
"You know, when Marshall was looking for 1940 Bridgeport, CT, they actually went to Bridgeport and there was very little left from the 1940s," Clark said. "They came to Buffalo and they relaized, 'Wow, we can make this look like '40s Connecticut, no problem at all.' So it's just, you know, again goes to show that saving these great buildings and great edipises and architectural assets are something that really paid off great dividends for us."
Marshall will have its Buffalo premiere Saturday, October 7 at the North Park Theater.
